Installing the Insight Student

The Insight Student is the component that allows a Student's system to report to the Insight Teacher console. It provides all the required components and provides the Student with a method to engage with the Teacher if assistance is required in class.

Installation of the Insight Student application requires administrative credentials on the operating system that the software is being installed on.

  1. To begin installing, locate the InsightStudent.pkg application in the copy of Faronics Insight you were provided or downloaded. Double-click the installation file.

  2. The application will launch and will display a window asking you to run a compatibility check on the client system. Click Allow.

  3. Once completed, the installer will show some details of the version of the software that you are installing, click Continue.

  4. The next screen will display the license agreement for Faronics Insight. Review the terms of the license agreement and click Continue to accept the license agreement and then click Agree.

  5. The next screen shows the option to enable the Enhanced Security mode. If you have been provided a Security Token, please enter it here. If you are responsible for determining if this feature is to be used, please refer to the documentation to select an appropriate Security Token. Once appropriate settings have been made, click Continue.

    It is recommended that the Enhanced Security mode for Insight be enabled to prevent unauthorized installations of the Teacher console from accessing Student computers.

  6. The next screen allows for the configuration of the Admin Password to secure the configuration options of the Insight Student. Once set, click Continue.

    The Admin Password allows access to the Administrator Settings found in the in the Student console.

  7. The next screen provides the ability to configure the Insight Connector for the Insight Student. If you have been provided with an IP Address, Hostname, or FQDN for your Insight Connector, enter it here. Click Continue.

  8. Next, the option to configure the default Class ID and several other options are shown. If your IT staff has provided a Class ID for you, enter this here. If you are responsible for assigning your own Class ID, please review the documentation and select an appropriate Class ID. Once the appropriate options have been configured, click Continue. You can enable the extensions after the installation is finished.

    • For Safari: To enable Faronics Insight Safari App Extension, launch Insight Student and then open Safari. From the Extensions preferences, select to enable the extension. Enabling the extension in Safari is a one-time action, however, it must be enabled for each user.

    • For Chrome and Firefox: To enable Faronics Insight Browser Extension, depending on the operating system you are using, you will either be automatically prompted to install the extension or get a notification to do so manually through System Preferences > Profiles.

    If Firefox extension has been enabled, you will need to manually remove this extension after uninstalling Insight Student.

  9. Next, the option to enable the Wi-Fi Restrictions is shown. If desired, enable this feature and enter the list of authorized SSIDs. Click Continue.

  10. A screen will be shown with the details of the disk space required for the installation. Click Install to start the installation process. Enter the administrator password when prompted.

  11. Once complete, the window below will be shown. Click Restart to complete the installation of the Insight Student.

Starting from macOS Ventura:

Once rebooted, the Student computer will be visible in the Insight Teacher console.

After the computer has restarted, perform the following additional steps to complete the installation of Insight Student:

  1. Log in as the intended user for Insight Student.

  2. Depending on your operating systems:

After the installation is complete, background items crucial for Insight to perform tasks will be added and enabled under System Settings > General > Login Items. Disabling these items will prevent Insight from working.

On macOS Monterey and earlier systems: Click Open System Preferences button and enable FIStudentUI.app (Under Privacy) on the right to allow Accessibility and Screen Recording.

On macOS Ventura: Click Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility.
